Is there such thing as a spirit world?

Like in the movie Insidious, there was this kid who got dragged into this dead spirit world. He was in a coma for months; turns out, this demon wanted to possess his body while he was in the dark world. Sounds like a bunch of hollywood stuff but I'm just curious to know if there is actually such thing as that?
